Yuat

This is a large and dramatic mask from the Yuat River region of Papua New Guinea.

Boldly carved with imposing volumes the mask has large square holes that have seen much use.

Never meant to be worn this type of mask is held high up on stakes and 'dressed' with grasses.  Attesting to this usage this example has two well worn holes at bottom and top points.
