This is a fine old Southern Highland's woven spirit figure - Timbuwarra.

Made of woven rattan, lightly overmodelled and painted in traditional highland pigments these figures are suppose said to be "Spirits of the flesh which guard the doors"
 
This particular example has particualry nice dynamic tension and is crisply, beautifully painted.
